I have a D50 and would like to start macro photography. Can you recommend a good macro lens or should I go with close up adapters first to see if I like it?

Yes, a good plan would be get some $40 adapters until you can afford a Nikon 60 mm macro lens. Skip the third-party lenses … Your lenses will last for decades … through maybe four of five camera bodies as technology advances.

Close up filters are rather limiting. Both in field of view and clarity. But they are inexpensive compared to a good macro-lens. You could check ebay for used macro lenses, just make certain it will fit your camera.
