You want a digital SLR. They are made by Canon, Nikon and many others. Prices are upwards of $500. The Canon Rebel has been favorably reviewed. To get an idea of what’s available and excellent camera reviews, see http://dpreview.com/

any DSLR would do the trick. but for starter, you can look at nikon d70s or d50 or d80 or canon 350d or 30d.

Take a hard look at Pentax K100D & Olympus Evolt E500’s. They offer more value/better setup for less money then the Obnoxious big boys at Canon/Nikon.

    Street Price (with kit lens)
    K100D ($699)
    E500 ($799) with 2 lenses
    D50 ($699)
    D70 ($999)
    Dig Rebel XT ($799)

Best VALUE, in my opinion, would be the Nikon D50. Besides the moderate cost for the body, it allows you to buy some of the best lenes in the world. To me, this is part of the value equation. Canon is also excellent, but I am not familiar with the line and don’t know current pricing. Anything else would ultimately be very limiting and, to me, that is not value.

If you have an existing film SLR, generally go with the digital equivilant (Nikon, Canon). If it’s of reasonable age your lenses will work and you will save yourself some expense.

If you want to get into some lenses to try them, plenty of camera stores online like keh.com.
