Wanting to buy a Canon Rebel XSi slr Camera and had a question regarding lenses? ? December 4, 2009 | 11:19 am

I am looking at the Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS and the Canon EF 70-200mm/4L. Any thoughts? I don't want to spend a ton of money and these seemed to be good "basics" and had great reviews.

They are great lenses to get started with, they’re both excellent lenses, clear and sharp. Also I’d add one very inexpensive additional lens, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 it’s sharp as a tack and a great first prime lens to learn with ($85) …

    happy shooting.

The 70-200 mm f/4 is a good one for shooting field sports and the 17-85 mm is perfect for shooting from wide angle to medium telephoto. I would not worry about the little over lap between the two lenses.

I have the 70-200 F4 and love it.

If you are planning on purchasing both, I don’t think you will be disappointed. The 17-85 IS looks like a great everyday lens that you’ll keep on your camera a lot!
