Which zoom lens for a Canon EOS digital SLR? December 1, 2009 | 11:17 am

I want to buy a zoom lens for my girlfriends Canon EOS digital SLR for her for Christmas (sorry not sure the exact model). I have no idea about cameras and I have about £80 (US5). Is there something out there I could buy?

The EF 50mm f/1.8 II ($85), though not a zoom, has great image quality for the price. The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS ($155, $140 if you get the white box version) is also reasonable quality. She might have that one already though, so you might want to check first.

Here’s a list of Canon lenses from lowest to highest price:

By zoom I assume you mean telephoto. The only telephoto you can get for that price is the EF 75-300mm. It’s a pretty crappy lens but if she’s an amateur she probably won’t notice.
