Just to clarify the previous answers:
58mm is the filter size. It has nothing to do with the type of camera it will fit on.
What matters is the mount. IF the lens is an EF or EF-S mount it will fit on your XTi no problem.
If the lens is an FD mount you’ll need an adapter. The downside of this is that you will only be able to focus manually and you’ll also have problems with metering. In my opinion it’s not worth the effort and if it is an FD lens you should just get the EF 50mm f/1.8 for $100.

Yes it will. All Canon EF lenses will fit on both film and digital Canon EOS model cameras. The EFs lenses like the kit lens for your XTi will not fit on the film cameras though.
The exception being that if the lens is over 20 years old it will have the FD mount and this will not work. The FD mount was Canon’s mount before the advent of autofocus lenses. So if your lens is an autofocus lens it will work just fine.

I think you are getting confusing information regarding your digital slr and canon film lenses, You can use Canon FD lenses on a digital slr providing you buy an adaptor from Ebay which is EOS to FD, you can also buy an adaptor for screw lenses.
I think you might find that the 58 mm refers to the filter thread.
